3net 3D channel on DirectTV starting Sunday, February 13th

DirecTV has become the first distributor to carry 3net, the joint venture TV network from Sony Corp., Discovery Communications and IMAX. The 24/7 3D TV network will launch on the satcaster on Sunday at 8 PM ET with the world premieres of original 3D programs China Revealed and Forgotten Planet as well as the 3D TV premiere of Into the Deep 3D. The network will roll out original 3D series and other new programming every night at 9 PM ET.

ESPN 3D Boxing – I hope it’s not too realistic

ESPN 3D will broadcast boxing in their “Friday Night Fights” series on February 18th at 9pm EST.
It will be interesting to see how the 3D effect works on this event. On paper it should be very easy to make the boxers (and the referee) ‘pop’ because the background color of the ring will be a solid color and the ring is a relatively small area of focus for the wide camera shots. As with other live-action sports the ability to offer many camera angles & viewpoints while maintaining the 3D effect without excessive ghosting or crosstalk is the key.
I’m definitely looking forward to the slow motion 3D replays. I wonder if they’ll come out like the boxing scenes with Brad Pitt in the movie Snatch.
